BIO
I was born and raised in the shadow of Mount Timpanogos in Pleasant Grove, Utah and now live on the majestic Lost Coast in California with my husband, sons, twenty-eight goats, two sheep, three cats, a puppy, and countless gophers. When I am not in the studio where I sculpt ceramic and fabricate jewelry, you can find me in the garden or managing CounterPunch or working on this damned website which seems to take far too much time.
Working with the figure, usually female, offers an opportunity to build a relationship with the piece and reflect on who she might be; what makes her unique; and the narrative she is participating in. Most often, a piece is a reflection of musings of philosophical questions, or shallower day-to-day issues. By realizing these thoughts in three dimension, I can articulate the matter visually to attain a better understanding, or at least acquire some sort of satisfaction of these interpretations, if not a final conclusion.
This pleasure of making art is heightened through the medium of clay, as it is the ideal medium for my spontaneous and experimental working style. I allow the clay to respond with cracks and wrinkles, which contribute to the time-worn or distressed finishes which appeal to me.
“To make” implies an end product, which necessitates follow-through. In the process of “making”, a need to move onto the next step of the process is initiated. When the process satiates, the finished piece is a by-product. We don’t eat to make waste, but to satisfy our hunger and to sustain us. “Making” satisfies a hunger to create meaning and to appease the need to be productive, which for me feels like a deep-seated instinct rather than a learned behavior.
